University of California Cooperative Extension vegetable crops farm advisor Bob Mullen has retired after devoting 34 years to the California agricultural industry, nearly all of them in San Joaquin County.

Mullen earned a bachelor's degree in 1965 in a major that was then called “truck crops,” alluding to the method many farmers used to get their products to market. Today, a similar major would be plant science or vegetable crops.

Following three years in the Navy, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, Mullen joined UC Cooperative Extension in Contra Costa County in January 1970.
