Small Grain, Forage Field Tours, May 1, Visalia and Five Points
On May 1, meet with Extension specialists, researchers, farm advisors, and industry members to assess central California’s 2014 cereal varieties and disease tolerance.
Session One: Small grain silage tour
Located at Milky Way Dairy located north of Visalia, Calif. from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Focus is on a large scale replicated study with wheat and triticale grown for silage, small grain, and weed control.
Speakers include: Lee Jackson, Janice Cooper, Steve Wright, Alex Souza, Carol Collar, and seed company representatives. Complimentary breakfast with burritos.
Directions to Milky Way Dairy - from Highway 99 take Highway 198 east two miles, exit Plaza Street North, continue north on Plaza as it turns to Road 80, continue north past the county landfill, turn left immediately after crossing the St. Johns River, and follow the signs.
Session Two: Wheat and small grains
Located at Westside Research and Extension Station – Five Points, Calif., corner of Lassen and Oakland from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

10:00 - 10:15 - Wheat salinity study- Isabel Alicia del Blanco, Jorge Dubcovsky
10:15 - 10:30 - Wheat nitrogen leaf testing study – Mark Lundy
10:30 - 10:45 - Wheat nitrogen-variety-yield-nitrogen management – Bob Hutmacher, Steve Wright
10:45 - 11:30 - Small grain variety trials - disease resistance management - small grain weed control - Lee Jackson, Jorge, Dubcovsky Janice Cooper, Steve Wright, and seed company representatives.
12:00- 1:00 - Lunch provided
Directions: Go west on Whitley Ave. to 9th Ave., turn right on 9th Ave., then go back east along the ditch bank to the east end of the wheat field, then turn left and go north along the wheat field about 150 feet.
3:00 – 4:00 Corcoran region wheat and triticale (informal tour)
