A new cost-of-production study for wine grapes grown in the Sacramento River Delta region is now available from University of California Cooperative Extension.

The study is based upon a hypothetical farm using viticultural practices common in the region. Input and reviews were provided by UC farm advisors, researchers and local growers. It shows current per acre costs to establish and produce wine grapes with an emphasis on Chardonnay and Merlot varieties.

Included in the study are descriptions of the assumptions used to identify current costs for individual field operations, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead. A “ranging analysis” table shows profits over a range of prices and yields. Other tables show monthly cash costs, hourly equipment costs and the whole farm annual equipment, investment and business overhead costs.
