Arizona’s 2009 Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 125,000 acres, down 25,000 acres from 2008. Growers are expected to harvest 124,000 acres for grain, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Phoenix, Ariz., Field Office.

Other wheat planted is estimated at 7,000 acres, down 6,000 acres from a year ago. Growers intend to harvest 5,000 acres for grain.

The 48,000 acres planted to barley is up 6,000 acres from last year’s crop. Barley area harvested for grain is estimated at 45,000 acres.

Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 45,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from a year ago. Area harvested for grain is set at 10,000 acres. Sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 50,000 acres, down 7,000 acres from last year. Area harvested for grain is set at 15,000 acres, down 12,000 acres from a year ago.

Arizona harvested alfalfa is estimated at 270,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from 2008. All other hay to be harvested is estimated at 30,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from a year ago.

Acreage planted to upland cotton is estimated at 140,000, up 5,000 acres from last year. American-Pima planted area at 1,000 acres is up 200 acres from 2008.

The area devoted to dry edible beans is estimated at 11,000 acres for 2009.
