Dow AgroSciences received registrations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) for Lorsban Advanced insecticide, a low odor and low volatile organic compound (VOC) formulation.

Lorsban Advanced contains the active ingredient chlorpyrifos, the same as in Lorsban-4E and one of the most widely-used insecticides in California production agriculture. It is the first and only chlorpyrifos-containing insecticide using this innovative formulation in the United States.

Lorsban Advanced is formulated as an emulsion in water (EW). This new water-based formulation is different from Lorsban-4E, which is an emulsifiable concentrate (EC). The reformulation to an EW results in a product that emits fewer VOCs and has less odor when applied.

“Dow AgroSciences recognized the VOC issue years ago and began working on solutions,” says Brian Timmerman, Dow AgroSciences marketing specialist. “The reformulation of chlorpyrifos happens at the perfect time because VOC issues have become front-page news with immediate ramifications at the grower level.”

“In certain counties, growers are already limited in their product choices, their method of application and their application timing with certain crop protection products. We believe Lorsban Advanced will help reduce overall VOC emissions,” Timmerman says. This will be especially important as the new VOC regulations take full effect in the San Joaquin Valley in 2009.”

VOCs are carbon-containing substances that have high vapor pressure and low water solubility. The compounds are present in hundreds of products including paints, exhaust smoke, and certain pesticides. When exposed to air, VOCs volatilize into gaseous form and can contribute to ground-level ozone formation.

In California, all industries and sources of compounds are being required to reduce emissions to meet the ozone standards of the federal Clean Air Act. The CA DPR has been working for several years to reduce pesticide VOC emissions by specified amounts to meet obligations under the 1994 State Implementation Plan.

Lorsban Advanced represents the end of a multi-year research and development process by Dow AgroSciences resulting in an innovative product for California agriculture.

“Although the EW formulation will be new to California, a similar formulation has been successfully applied to crops in South America for several years,” says Timmerman. “California has a set of circumstances that are unique from anywhere in the world; therefore the benefits realized by growers in that state will have added importance.”

In 2008, Dow AgroSciences will make Lorsban Advanced available to growers with crops located in high-VOC areas — such as the San Joaquin Valley. Crops that should see use include alfalfa, cotton and tree nuts. Application windows in other crops where Lorsban-4E is heavily relied on may have passed at the time of registration. In 2009, Dow AgroSciences expects a full product launch in all key crops.

Lorsban Advanced is labeled for the same crops and the same pests as Lorsban-4E. Use rates, application practices and tank-mix compatibility will also be similar for the two products. Growers applying Lorsban Advanced should expect the same proven efficacy as with Lorsban-4E.
