The new California Food Handler Card Law based on SB 303, which requires food handlers to complete a training course and assessment to obtain the food handler card, has officially been signed into law by Gov. Brown. Premier Food Safety was actively involved as a member of the task force committee to assist in getting the SB 303 legislation to be more clearly written and updated based on food safety training requirements. Premier Food Safety has received the specific ANSI ASTM e2659 accreditation to offer the approved online training.
The California Food Handler Card Law originally started with SB 602, which was signed into law in September 2010. This law, though well intended in theory, did not properly address certain critical areas including training and accreditation standards, as some governing and industry organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) were not consulted in drafting the legislation. The newly approved and signed California Food Handler Card Law based on SB 303, cleaned up and updated many of the areas that needed clarification, including the proper accreditation standards for the scope of the intended target audience, the food handler. In order to effectively address these areas of concern, Premier Food Safety, the leading provider of food safety certification training, was actively involved in the task force committee to provide expert guidance for the areas of the SB 303 bill that related to food safety training standards.
To provide a high-standard and quality training experience for food handlers, the new SB 303 revision requires that the training and certificate process for the California Food Handler Card may only be provided by organizations who receive the ANSI ASTM E2659 accreditation. Organizations must have a high level of competency and offer an exceptional training program in order to receive approval from this comprehensive and complex accreditation process.
“We are very pleased to receive the ANSI accreditation, and this achievement reiterates the fact that our customers can buy with confidence. Premier invested a significant amount of resources to develop and refine this training program with support from our team of industry experts and clients. Based on the extremely positive feedback from our food handler customers so far, this program is providing a remarkable training experience,” said Dirk Yoo, director of Marketing for Premier Food Safety.
The food handler card online training is based on an easy to navigate, educational, and interactive program offered in English, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese for as low as $10 per person.
