The following is the latest Arizona Crops Report from the Phoenix Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
• Cotton ginning
Arizona’s cotton ginners ginned 410,200 bales of upland cotton from the 2009 crop, an increase of just under 40,000 bales from last year.
Ginners ginned 3,950 bales of pima cotton from the 2009 crop.
• Fruit and nut estimates
Arizona apple production is estimated at 5.5 million pounds, the lowest production since the 2001 season. The production from 1,200 acres is down 12.5 million pounds from last year due primarily to an ill-timed frost last spring. The value of the production is estimated at $1.31 million based on an average price of 29.3 cents per pound.
United States apple production is estimated at 9.74 billion pounds and valued at $2.22 billion. Washington was the top-producing state at 5.5 billion pounds.
Arizona pecan production is estimated at 20 million pounds, a 14 percent increase from the previous year. With an average price expected at $1.90 per pound, the 2009 crop is valued at $38 million.
U.S. pecan production is estimated at 291 million pounds, up 50 percent from last year. The 2009 crop is valued at $398 million. Georgia was the top-producing state at 85 million pounds.
