Windy, cold spring weather characterized the early California San Luis Obispo County grape growing season, but since then problems with pests and diseases have not been significant, according to Victor Roberts, owner of Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery at Templeton.

“Insect pressure is almost non-existent at this point,” he says. “But, the recent forecast and continuing heat may change that fact.”

The story is the same all along the California coast. “There are no really big fires,” says Jim Dana, marketing manager for Western Farm Service. “We haven’t seen much powdery mildew on grapes. The cool weather earlier delayed growth for a while, but we’re starting to catch up fast.”
