No-till Cotton Production Field Day May 30

The Conservation Agriculture Systems Innovation Center will hold a two-stop field tour of innovative and cost-cutting no-till cotton production systems on Thursday, May 30. The program will be begins at 9 a.m. in south Dos Palos (Nees Avenue and I-5) and continues at 11 a.m. at the UC West Side Research and Extension Center, 17353 W. Oakland in Five Points. Some of the presentations are repeated at both sites.

During the field visits, participants will learn about no-till cotton production techniques and how the systems help farmers address farm economics and regulatory issues. The sessions also provide information about how no-till systems help improve soil quality.

(On north side of Nees Avenue about two miles east of I-5)

1. 60” drip-irrigated no-till cotton following wheat, Danny Ramos, Lucero Farms

2. Opportunities and techniques for successful no-till cotton, Monte Bottens, California Ag Solutions, Madera, Calif.

3. Recent successes and progress with no-till cotton in the San Joaquin Valley, Jeff Mitchell, Department of Plant Sciences, University of California, Davis                              

4. 2013 Cotton pest update and status report, Pete Goodell, UC IPM Program                                  

11 a.m.

(At the UC West Side Research and Extension Center at the corner of Lassen and Oakland Avenues about 5 miles south of Five Points, Calif.)

2. Recent successes and progress with no-till cotton in the SJV and opportunities for improving soil quality with sustained no-till, Jeff Mitchell, Department of Plant Sciences, University of California, Davis

4. Cropping systems evaluations of flat-planted no-till cotton under drip and overhead irrigation, Joy Paloutzian, recent master's degree graduate of Fresno State

5. Discussion – Gearing up for CT cotton in 2014
