West Coast Nationals is ground-pounding action for all ages

The 2008 West Coast Nationals Power Pulling Series (WCN) will begin Feb. 9 at the Elks/Unocal Event Center and Rodeo Grounds in Santa Maria, Calif., followed by the final competition in Tulare, Feb. 12 and 13, at the Tulare County Fairgrounds. New in 2008, attendees who register for World Ag Expo admission will atomically be admitted into the Tulare WCN events for free!

The final two nights of the 2008 Series will be held in conjunction with the World Ag Expo. The series champions will be named on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The outstanding lineup of high-powered tractors and four-wheel drive trucks will be a highlight of the Expo’s events.

The first World Ag Expo Tractor Pull was held in February 2004. The idea to hold such an event stemmed from an International Agri-Center Outrageous Marketing committee meeting in June 2003.

“The group came up with many different ideas, and having a tractor pull was one of them,” said Rob Fletcher, WCN liaison.

The West Coast Nationals series was developed in Sept. 2004. World Ag Expo chairmen Fletcher (2005) and Erin Ferguson (2006) were attending a tractor pull in Ohio, when an East Coast tractor-puller suggested a West Coast series should be started. If a series were developed, it would draw competitors from the east to the west.

“We called Donnie Fagundes with the Pacific Tractor Pullers Association right then and asked him if we could put a series together and he thought it was a great idea,” said Fletcher.

Today, the WCN is the exclusive points truck and tractor power pulling series on the West Coast. Eventually, the WCN would like to grow to include Oregon and Washington as venue states. The series attracts over 20,000 spectators, and competitors and visitors from around the world.

Once again, the 2008 pull will bring competitors together from all over the country. The Santa Maria competition gates will open at noon with the main event starting at 1 p.m.

Tulare will host the Power Pulling Series on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with the series finals on Wednesday, Feb.14 at the Tulare County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with the main event at 6 p.m. both days.

Attendees can purchase e–tickets through the World Ag Expo website www.worldagexpo.com, or on the West Coast Nationals website www.westcoastnationals.com. General admission is $12 per person and pit passes are $10. World Ag Expo attendees who complete their online registration will also be able to use their Expo pass to enter the WCN events; saving guests $12 on event admission!

The 2008 World Ag Expo is Feb. 12-14, at the International Agri-Center in Tulare, Calif. This year, the Expo will expand to 2.6 million square feet with the addition of the Dairy Technology Center and outdoor exhibits in the dairy section.
