2009 California Pistachio Water Day is Jan. 14

The 2009 California Pistachio Water Day is scheduled for Jan. 14 at the Visalia Convention Center in Visalia, Calif., from 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event will be moderated by Brent Holtz and Robert Beede, farm advisors, University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension, Madera and Kings counties.

The program includes:

7:00 a.m. - Registration

8:00 - “California water: managing crisis and opportunity” -

Tim Quinn, Director, Association of California Water Agencies;

8:30 – “Water relations, water requirements, and irrigation scheduling” -

David Goldhamer, Irrigation Specialist, UC Davis;

9:15 – “Drought strategies: how to best manage a limited water supply and impact on current and future production” -

David Goldhamer;

10:00 – “Fine tuning your micro-irrigation system” -

Larry Schwankl, Irrigation Specialist, UC Davis;

10:30 - Break

11:00 – “Water and botryosphaeria and alternaria blights” -

Themis Michailides, Plant Pathologist, UC Kearney Ag Center/UC Davis;

11:30 – “Navel orangeworm sanitation, insecticide efficacy, and factors related to damage” -

Joel Siegel, USDA-ARS, Entomologist, Parlier, Calif.;

12:00 - “Navel orangeworm management: results from large scale field trials” -

Brad Higbee, Research Entomologist, Paramount Farming Company;

12:30 – Lunch

The ABCs of MRLs

American agriculture exports 20 to 30 percent of its production annually. For specific commodities, the percentage is much higher. When recommending and applying pest management products for crops, license Pest Control Advisers (PCAs)  and applicators and farmers must be aware of which products applied are in compliance with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) established by foreign customers. This CE course details the MRL issue and why compliance is critical to marketing into world trade.
