SJV grain, alfalfa tours scheduled for next week

University of California Cooperative Extension will host three field tours for San Joaquin Valley growers to view the latest small grain and alfalfa variety trials.

Heading the tours will be Lee Jackson, UC Davis small grains specialist; Dan Putnam, UC extension forage specialist; county UCCE farm advisors and industry representatives.

Session one will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., April 29, at the University’s Westside Research and Extension Station in Five Points, Calif., concluding with a complimentary lunch sponsored by RSI and Penny-Newman. Topics include a presentation entitled “Switchgrass Early Production Practices for California” presented by Bob Hutmacher, UC Extension agronomist, along with small grain and alfalfa variety trials.

Session two will begin at 1:30 p.m. also on April 29, at McCarthy Farms, located at the NW corner of Utica and Tenth Avenues, in Tulare County, where varieties will be posted and presenters available for grower questions. Small plot varieties showing wheat (both common and durum), triticale, and barley will be viewed.

Session three will be held at Milky Way Dairy, North of Visalia, Calif., on April 30, beginning at 8 a.m. A complimentary breakfast sponsored by RSI and Penny-Newman will be followed by the viewing of wheat and triticale varieties for forage. Varieties shown will include: Wheat – Blanca Royale, Blanca Fuerte, Joaquin, PR 1404, Ultra, 20728, 40207; and Triticale – Trical 118, Trical 105, and Trical Camelot.
