Foothill tree fruit grower meeting focuses on pruning, water and pest management

Lynn Wunderlich, local U.C. Cooperative Extension farm advisor for El Dorado and Amador counties, invites foothill fruit growers to a “Winter Tree Fruit Meeting” to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 8:15 a.m. until noon. The meeting will take place in the High Hill Ranch Pie House, 2901 High Hill Road, Placerville.

Featured speakers include Professor Ted DeJong, pomologist at UC Davis, who will discuss techniques for pruning and thinning. DeJong will also present information on forecasting fruit size potential based on spring weather temperatures. Janet Caprile, UC Cooperative Extension farm advisor in Contra Costa County, will give apple and pear growers a heads-up on new codling moth insecticides. Local Farm Advisor Lynn Wunderlich and Resource Conservation District Project Coordinator Mark Egbert will provide an update on water quality monitoring results, with UC Water Management Specialist Terry Prichard giving tips on how to avoid water run-off from orchards. Special guest Carl Rosato of Woodleaf Farms, located in Oroville, Calif., will discuss his experience of growing peaches, apples, cherries, and plums organically for over 30 years.

There is a registration fee of $5 per person. Space is limited. Preregister by Feb. 22.
