Foothill Grape Day on June 5 features marketing panel, Mediterranean variety discussion

Lynn Wunderlich, Univeristy of California (UC) Cooperative Extension farm advisor in El Dorado and Amador counties, invites foothill grape growers, winemakers, and industry partners to the annual Foothill Grape Day on June 5, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Sogno Winery, 3046 Ponderosa Road, Shingle Springs, Calif.

Topics include “Spider Mite Control in Vineyards: Organic and Conventional Strategies” (Dr. Frank Zalom, UC Davis Entomology); “Top 10 Mediterranean Varieties for Warm Places in California” (Glenn McGourty, U.C. Cooperative Extension, Lake and Mendocino counties); and “Evaluation of Barbera Clones” (Dr. Matthew Fidelibus, UC Kearney Agriculture Center, Parlier, Calif.).

A special guest speaker panel: “Differentiating the Foothills: Defining and Marketing What Can Set Us Apart” will end the morning’s discussion. Panel speakers will include Bill Easton, Terre Rouge and Easton Winery; Stuart Spencer, Lodi Woodbridge Commission; and Mike Dunne, Sacramento Bee.

The ABCs of MRLs

American agriculture exports 20 to 30 percent of its production annually. For specific commodities, the percentage is much higher. When recommending and applying pest management products for crops, license Pest Control Advisers (PCAs)  and applicators and farmers must be aware of which products applied are in compliance with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) established by foreign customers. This CE course details the MRL issue and why compliance is critical to marketing into world trade.
