Arizona planting intentions – 17 percent less upland cotton, 45 percent more Durum wheat

Upland cotton acreage in Arizona is expected to total 140,000 acres, a decrease of 30,000 acres from a year ago, according to a planting intentions survey conducted by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Arizona Field Office.

Arizona’s American-Pima cotton producers intended to plant 1,000 acres, a decrease of 1,500 acres. Nationally, upland cotton acres are expected to total 9.19 million, down 13 percent from 2007 and American-Pima acreage is expected to decrease 30 percent, to 204,000 acres.

Field corn acreage for all purposes is expected to total 45,000 acres in Arizona, 18 percent less than a year ago. For the U.S., corn growers intend to plant 86 million acres, down 8 percent from 2007 when corn-planted area was the highest since 1944.

Arizona sorghum growers are expected to plant 45,000 acres, the same as last year. Nationally, sorghum acreage is expected to decrease 4 percent to 7.42 million acres.

Arizona hay growers are expected to harvest 285,000 acres, 5,000 acres less than last year. This acreage includes both alfalfa and other types of hay. Total U.S. hay acreage intended to be harvested is estimated at 60.6 million acres, down 2 percent from a year ago.

Arizona’s Durum wheat seedings are estimated at 145,000 acres, up 65,000 acres from 2007. For the United States, area seeded to Durum wheat is expected to total 2.63 million acres, up 22 percent from a year ago. Arizona’s seedings of wheat other than Durum are set at 10,000 acres, a 4,000-acre increase from last year.

Arizona’s barley acreage is estimated at 40,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from 2007. Nationally, barley growers intend to plant 4.15 million acres for 2008, up 3 percent from last year.
