Reclamation initiates levee repairs at Prospect Island

Oct 23, 2007 11:23 AM

The Bureau of Reclamation began levee repair work at Prospect Island on October 4, 2007. A contract was awarded to DD-M Crane and Rigging of Alameda, Calif., to construct the repairs, which will include closing two levee breaks on federal property, repairing about 600 feet of side-slope damage on one of the levees, unwatering the federal property, and repairing bank erosion damage to private property adjacent to one of the breaks. The work is expected to take about 2.5 months to complete, and access to the federal property will remain closed during this time.

The repairs will eliminate a boating hazard, restore property damaged in the January 2006 levee breaks, protect the Miner Slough levee, and restore access to property.

Prospect Island is located in Solano County in the northern portion of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The island is adjacent to the Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel and Miner Slough, approximately 8 miles northeast of Rio Vista and 16 miles southwest of West Sacramento.

The 1,253-acre parcel owned by Reclamation is bounded to the north by an east-west levee from Arrowhead Harbor to the ship channel levee, the east by Miner Slough, the south by land owned by the Port of Sacramento, and the west by the Deep Water Ship Channel levee.
