Western Farm Press launches new online almond disease management CEU

Oct 22, 2007 12:25 PM

Western Farm Press, in partnership with MANA Crop Protection and the Almond Board of California, has launched a new, free online continuing education course.

Disease Management for California Almond Production is now online at www.westernfarmpress.com.

It is accredited for 2 CEUs by both the California Department of Pesticide Regulation and the California Certified Crop Adviser program. It is accredited for 2 CCA units in Integrated Pesticide Management. DPR credits are in the “Other” category.

The new online course represents the ninth free online CEU course offered by Western Farm Press.

Since Western Farm Press launched the first online CEU in August 2004, more than 10,000 courses have been completed by Pest Control Advisers and other DPR licensees, as well as Arizona Department of Agriculture applicators and CCAs in both states. More than 25,000 CEUs have been earned online.

This new almond disease management course is supported financially online by MANA Crop Protection. Information for the course was developed by the Almond Board of California.

”MANA is proud to partner with the Almond Board of California and Western Farm Press to bring this online continuing education course to almond growers and PCAs,” said Troy Bettner, senior product marketing manager for fungicides with MANA Crop Protection. “The almond industry is very important to MANA, and this service reflects our overall commitment to integrated disease management in the orchard.”

The course covers all the diseases growers must deal with in producing California almonds. One of the increasingly important elements of this effort is managing resistance to the arsenal of fungicides available to control diseases.

“A key component of this course is fungicide resistance management, and its release is very timely,” said Bob Curtis, senior manager, production research for the Almond Board of California.

“In particular, PCAs and growers who deal with late-season diseases must view fungicide resistance management from bloom to the end of June. They must consider the number of applications of any given fungicide and how it is alternated with others having different modes of action spanning this entire period.

“This course covers the very important principles and execution of season-long fungicide resistance management,” Curtis concluded.

There are nine accredited CEU courses on the Western Farm Press website offering 20 hours of DPR credit. This includes 5 hours of DPR approved laws and regulations. Almost that many credits are available to Arizona Department of Agriculture licensed applicators and CCAs.

All courses are free, supported online by major California agricultural suppliers or Western Farm Press. The courses also are available on the California Association of Pest Control Advisers (CAPCA) website www.capca.com.
