Major California rice processor, union reach accord

Farmers’ Rice Cooperative, a California cooperative owned by more than 800 rice growers, has reached a new labor agreement with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 17.

“We’re proud of this agreement because it works for our grower-members, for our processing operation, and for the workers and communities here in the Sacramento area,” said Keith Hargrove, vice president of manufacturing at the cooperative.

The 165 employees at the West Sacramento plant process 385,000 metric tons of rice each year, making it one of the largest rice processors in California.

“All of us are committed to the same goals: producing high quality products, providing good jobs, and maintaining our competitive position while providing fair returns to the member-farmers,” said Daniel Moody, ILWU Local 17 Chief Steward at Farmers’ Rice Cooperative.

The union and Cooperative officials also agreed to work together on political and legislative issues that impact rice farmers, the processing industry, and local communities.
