Replacements aplenty for Lannate in strawberries

When a pesticide registration is pulled, there is normally plenty of hand wringing and teeth gnashing. However, no need for that with Southern California strawberry producers who will soon be losing Lannate, one of their most effective and long-standing insecticides for corn earworm control.
Frank Zalom, University of California (UC), Davis Extension entomologist, told PCAs at the recent Bayer CropScience consultants conference there is a handful of solid replacements.
He tested them all last fall on Camarosa variety strawberries at the South Coast UC Research and Extension Center and found they all are excellent replacements for Lannate.
Sept. 7 transplanted strawberries were infested with corn earworm larvae and treated on April 13 and harvested on May 2. Lannate was used as the standard for control.
The following treatments all equaled or exceeded Lannate and there was no significant difference in control among them:
-Rimon at 12 ounces.
-Intrepid at 12 ounces.
-Synapse 24 WG at 2 ounces.
-Synapse 24WG at 3 ounces.
-Radiant SG at 6 ounces.
“All the products in this trial present an alternative to Lannate,” said Zalom.
