Bolls are open on 50 percent of Arizona’s cotton acreage, compared to 34 percent a week earlier, and a five-year average of 47 percent. Cotton harvesting is underway with three percent completed. Cotton condition is mostly fair to good.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in Phoenix, Ariz. on Aug. 27 said 52 percent of the cotton crop was rated good, 33 percent fair, 14 percent excellent, and 1 percent poor.

In alfalfa, NASS rated Arizona’s crop also as mostly fair to good with 48 percent as fair, 33 percent good, 17 percent excellent, and 2 percent poor. Alfalfa harvest was active on over three quarters of the state’s acreage.

Statewide temperatures were above normal with the highest readings in Roll and Yuma with 111 degrees. Three-quarters of an inch of rain fell in the cotton growing area of Safford.
