Preseason desert winter vegetable workshop is Aug. 22 in Yuma, Ariz.

As the winter vegetable season approaches, growers are invited to a 2007 preseason vegetable workshop on Aug. 22 at the University of Arizona’s (UA) Cooperative Extension auditorium, Yuma, Ariz.

Topics for the 8:00 a.m. to noon program include:

“Whiteflies move farther than expected” - David Byrne, UA entomologist;

“Water management and its impact on lettuce production and quality” - Jorge Fonseca, vegetable specialist, UA Yuma Agricultural Center (YAC);

“Trends in insecticide use and development for desert vegetables” - John Palumbo, research entomologist, UA YAC;

“Updates and announcements from industry”;

“Farm workers provide insight for improving field labor retention in Arizona” - Kurt Nolte, UA Yuma County Cooperative Extension;

“Understanding wind flow patterns in the Yuma area” - Paul Brown, UA extension specialist and research scientist biometeorology;

“Energy consumption in crop production” - Tom Acker, mechanical engineering professor, Northern Arizona University; and

“Arizona's vegetable estimating program: The NASS perspective” - Dave DeWalt, associate director, National Agricultural Statistics Service - Arizona Field Office.

Lunch will follow sponsored by Valent.

The Cooperative Extension auditorium is located at 2200 W. 28th St., Yuma, Ariz. 85364. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
