Arizona cotton, alfalfa crops looking mostly good to fair

Good to fair is how the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in Phoenix, Ariz. sums up the current status of Arizona’s cotton and alfalfa crops.

In cotton, NASS rated 42 percent of the state’s cotton crop as good, 41 percent fair, 11 percent excellent, and 6 percent poor. Cotton boll setting stood at 73 percent compared to 62 percent a week earlier, and a five-year average of 74 percent.

In the July 23 report, NASS rated Arizona alfalfa as 51 percent good, 30 percent fair, 15 percent excellent, and 4 percent poor.

Hot temperatures continued across the state with 114 degrees in Paloma, Roll, and Phoenix.

With the summer monsoon season in progress, precipitation was reported at 18 of the 22 reporting stations. Douglas, Ariz. received 1.91 inches of rain.
