Predatory mites in agriculture seminar is July 11 in Bakersfield, Calif.

A half-day seminar on predatory mites in agriculture is scheduled for July 11 at the University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension (UCCE) office in Bakersfield, Calif.

Instructors will include: Beth Grafton-Cardwell, UC, Riverside; David Haviland, UCCE Kern County; and Jim McMurtry, UC, Riverside emeritus professor.

Topics for discussion will include:

An overview of the predatory mite survey project and general results – Beth Grafton-Cardwell;

Predatory mite surveys of vineyards and pear orchards in the North Coast region – Lucia Varela, North Coast IPM advisor;

Predatory mite surveys of crops on the coast – Maria Murrietta, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo;

Slide mount technique for identification of male spider mites - David Haviland;

The effects of pesticides on Phytoseiids - Frank Zalom, Javier Saenz de Cabezon, UC Davis entomology; and

How to maximize the success of predatory mite releases - Kim Gallagher, Sterling Insectary.

The 8:30 a.m. to noon meeting will be held at the UCCE office, 1031 South Mt. Vernon Avenue, Bakersfield.
