Arizona acreage survey results: Durum wheat, barley, corn up – sorghum 88 percent higher

Arizona’s Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 80,000 acres, up 7 percent from 2006, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s (NASS) Arizona Field Office in Phoenix, Ariz.

Growers are expected to harvest 79,000 acres for grain. Other wheat area is estimated at 5,000 acres, up 1,000 acres from a year ago. Growers intend to harvest 4,000 acres for grain.

The 35,000 acres planted to barley is up 10,000 acres from last year’s crop, NASS said. Barley area harvested for grain is estimated at 33,000 acres.

Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 55,000 acres, up 10 percent from a year ago. Area harvested for grain is set at 19,000 acres, 1,000 acres more than last season.

According to NASS, sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 45,000 acres, up 88 percent from 2006. Area harvested for grain is set at 18,000 acres, up 11,000 acres from a year ago.

Arizona alfalfa hay harvested area is estimated at 250,000 acres, unchanged from 2006. All other hay area to be harvested is estimated at 45,000 acres, unchanged from a year ago.

Acreage planted to upland cotton is estimated at 180,000, down 10,000 acres from last year, but the same as the March intentions. American-Pima planted area, at 4,000 acres, is down 3,000 from last year.
