SJV water management meeting June 21

As century summer temperatures arrive, the time is also drawing near for growers to face some tough decisions in this water-short year.

Surface water deliveries from the California state and federal water projects have been cut back dramatically this year due to a below normal Sierra Nevada snow pack. And there is little surplus water for sale in the state. What is available is very high priced.

Growers are facing major irrigation water cutbacks through the hot summer months. There is talk of abandoning some crops and cutting back on cuttings of alfalfa to preserve water supplies for permanent crops.

There is a meeting scheduled for June 21 at the Comfort Inn in Hanford, Calif. where University of California farm advisors and extension specialists will offer recommendations on making realistic crop and water management decisions to make the most out of limited water supplies.

Scheduled to offer suggestions are:

--Steve Wright, row crop farm advisor for Tulare and Kings County.

--Bob Hutmacher, California state cotton specialist.

--Carol Frate, alfalfa, corn and bean crop farm advisor, Kings County.

--Bob Beede, tree nut crop farm advisor for Kings and Tulare counties.

These experts will offer crop and water management decisions specifically for cotton, nut crops, corn and alfalfa.

Breakfast and registration begins at 7:15 with the program starting at 8 and closing at 9:30.
