Cotton squaring complete in 1 of 4 Arizona acres

While cotton planting in Arizona is 99 percent finished, cotton squaring is 25 percent complete, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s (NASS) Arizona Field Office in Phoenix, Ariz.

NASS’ report on June 4 listed 49 percent of the cotton crop in good condition, 45 percent fair, and 6 percent excellent.

More than two-thirds of Arizona’s small grain acreage has reached maturity with 10 to 15 percent harvested, NASS said.

In Durum wheat, 60 percent was listed as mature compared to 35 percent a week earlier, and a 5-year average of 62 percent. 10 percent of the crop was harvested compared to 4 percent a week earlier.

75 percent of the Arizona barley crop was rated as mature, compared to 50 percent the week earlier, and a 5-year average of 74 percent. 15 percent was harvested.

NASS reported 53 percent of the alfalfa crop in good condition, 27 percent fair, 16 percent excellent, and 4 percent poor.

In vegetables, fruit, and specialty crops, Western Arizona growers shipped

cantaloupes, honeydews, mixed melons, green onions, and seeded and seedless watermelons during the last week of May.

Producers in Central Arizona shipped cantaloupes, carrots, honeydews, mixed melons, potatoes, dry onions, and seeded and seedless watermelons.

Statewide temperatures were mostly above normal with the highest reading of 104 degrees in Phoenix.
