Dean tapped as next WPHA environmental, regulatory affairs director

For more than seven years, Nassar Dean was responsible for managing various federal agricultural programs for Riverside and San Diego county farmers and ranchers.

Nasser Dean is the new director of environmental and regulatory affairs for the Western Plant Health Association.

Dean will assess, analyze and coordinate association and member response to regulatory actions that could potentially impact fertilizer and crop protection providers and agricultural retailers in California, Arizona and Hawaii.

“Nasser’s diverse experiences make him well equipped to manage the wide range of regulatory issues facing our industries,” said Renee Pinel, president and CEO of WPHA. “His added perspective as a grower and former government official will be invaluable as WPHA develops strategies to shape and comply with regulations that impact our industries.”

Dean most recently served as a County Executive Director with the United States Department of Agriculture. For more than seven years, Dean was responsible for managing various federal agricultural programs for Riverside and San Diego county farmers and ranchers. His service to USDA provided him with experience in intergovernmental/public relations with stakeholders, including ag industry representatives, county, state, federal and congressional officials. Dean had previously served as an agribusiness advisor and adjunct instructor in Voronezh, Russia, working under the auspices of the United States Peace Corps.

“I’m sincerely honored to have been selected as director of environmental and regulatory affairs for WPHA, and I’m looking forward to making a significant contribution to the WPHA organization under Renee’s leadership,” said Dean. “I’m inspired by the confidence and responsibility that has been entrusted to me as I endeavor to become a highly effective advocate on behalf of WPHA’s impressive membership.”

Dean earned a bachelor’s degree, with honors, in political science from the California State University at Chico. Born and raised in Willows, Calif., Dean also has over 15 years experience in the California rice industry as a general partner of his family’s rice operation.
