2006 California cotton production

California farmers produced 779,000 bales of Upland cotton in 2006, 27 percent less than the 1.07 million bales produced in 2005. Harvested acreage, at 283,000 was 34 percent below the 428,000 harvested the previous year. The average yield was 1,321 pounds per acre, 127 pounds above 2005.

American-Pima production in California totaled 687,000 bales, up 23 percent from the 558,000 bales produced the previous year. Harvested acreage, at 274,000 was 20 percent above the 229,000 harvested in 2005. The average yield was 1,204 pounds per acre, 34 pounds above the previous year.

All cotton production in the United States is estimated at 21.6 million 480-pound bales, down 10 percent from last year’s record high. The U.S. all cotton yield averaged 814 pounds per harvested acre, down 17 pounds from 2005.

The U.S. Upland cotton production is estimated at 20.8 million bales, 10 percent less than last year’s record high. The U.S. yield for upland cotton is estimated at 806 pounds per acre, down 19 pounds from 2005.

The U.S. American-Pima production totaled 765,000 bales, up 21 percent from 2005. The yield for American-Pima is 1,136 pounds per acre, up 9 pounds from last year.
