University of California studies examine walnut, prune, and rice cost-of-production

The University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension (UCCE) has completed four new cost-of-production studies for growing organic walnuts, conventional walnuts, prunes (dried plums), and rice.
Each analysis is based upon a hypothetical farm operation using practices common in the region. UCCE farm advisors, researchers, growers, farm accountants, pest control advisers, industry consultants, and other agricultural associates provided input and reviews.
Assumptions used to identify current costs for the individual crops, material inputs, cash, and non-cash overhead are described. An analysis table shows profits over a range of prices and yields.
Other tables show the monthly cash costs, the costs and returns per acre, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment, and business overhead costs.
The new cost studies include:

2 - “Sample costs to establish a prune orchard and produce prunes, Sacramento Valley”;
3 – “Sample costs to establish a walnut orchard and produce walnuts, Sacramento Valley”; and
4 - “Sample costs to produce rice, Sacramento Valley”
