California wheat forecast

California farmers are expected to produce 630,000 tons of winter wheat in 2007, 45 percent above last year. The 300,000 acres expected to be harvested for grain is 20 percent above last year. The yield is expected to average 2.10 tons per acre, 21 percent above last year.

California’s Durum wheat production is forecast at 257,000 tons, up 33 percent from 2006. Acreage expected for harvest, at 90,000, is 38 percent above last year’s acreage. The expected yield of 2.85 tons per acre is 4 percent below the previous year.

United States winter wheat production is forecast to be 48.5 million tons, up 24 percent from 2006. Based on conditions as of May 1, the U.S. yield is expected to average 1.30 tons, 4 percent above May 2006. Harvested acreage was estimated at 37.2 million acres, up 19 percent from last year.

The U.S. estimate for Durum wheat production for states other than Arizona and California will not be available until July 12, 2007.
