Arizona cotton planting is 95 percent complete, squaring underway in Yuma fields

Cotton planting in Arizona is 95 percent complete, according to a May 21 report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Arizona Field Office. Cotton planting a year ago stood at 91 percent complete compared to the five-year average of 89 percent.

Cotton squaring has begun in the Yuma area.

Durum wheat is 100 percent headed compared to 97 percent in ’06 and a 98 percent five-year average. 15 percent of the crop is mature.

Barley is 99 percent headed compared to 99 percent in ’06 and a five-year average of 98 percent, NASS reported. 28 percent of the crop is rated mature.

The alfalfa harvest is active on over three-quarters of the state’s acreage. NASS rated alfalfa quality at 52 percent good, 24 percent fair, 20 percent excellent, and 4 percent poor.

During the week of May 14, vegetable, fruit, and specialty crop growers in Western Arizona shipped cabbage, cantaloupes, honeydews, green onions, and seeded and seedless watermelons.

Producers in Central Arizona shipped carrots, potatoes, dry onions, cantaloupes, plus seeded and seedless watermelons.

Temperatures in Arizona were mostly above normal across the state for the week ending May 20. The highest temperature was 102 degrees at Phoenix with the lowest recorded at the Grand Canyon at 29 degrees.

Precipitation was reported at 8 of the 22 reporting stations with St. Johns receiving .36 inches and Marana and Payson with .01 inches.
