’07 Arizona survey: Upland cotton acreage down, Pima down, corn to increase

Upland cotton acreage in Arizona is expected to total 180,000 acres in 2007, a decrease of 10,000 acres or 5.5 percent, according to the results of a planting intentions survey conducted by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Arizona Field Office.

American-Pima producers in Arizona intend to plant 3,000 acres in ‘07, a decrease of 4,000 acres or 133 percent.

NASS said upland cotton acres nationally are expected to total 11.9 million, down 21 percent from 2006 and American-Pima acreage is expected to decrease 10 percent to 292,000 acres.

Field corn acreage for all purposes may total 55,000 acres in Arizona, 10 percent more than a year ago. For the United States, corn growers intend to plant 90.5 million acres, up 15 percent from 2006. If realized, it would be the highest acreage since 1944 when 95.5 million acres were planted for all purposes.

Arizona sorghum growers are expected to plant 35,000 acres, 11,000 acres more than in 2006. Nationally, sorghum acreage is expected to increase 9 percent to 7.11 million acres.

Hay growers are expected to harvest 290,000 acres, 5,000 acres less than last year. The acreage includes alfalfa and other types of hay. Total U.S. hay acreage intended to be harvested is estimated at 63.1 million acres, up 4 percent from a year ago, NASS reported.

Durum wheat seedings are estimated on 80,000 acres in Arizona, up 5,000 acres from 2006. For the United States, area seeded to Durum wheat is expected to total 1.99 million acres, up 6 percent from a year ago. Arizona’s seedings of wheat other than Durum are set at 4,000 acres, unchanged from last year.

Barley acreage is estimated at 30,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from 2006. Nationally, barley growers intend to plant 3.70 million acres for 2007, up 7 percent from last year.
