Soils 101: Characteristics of Napa Valley Soils
Mark Battany, Viticulture & Soils Advisor, UC Cooperative Extension in San Luis Obispo & Santa Barbara Counties
- Spanish session: 7:30 - 9:30 a.m.
- English session: 10 a.m. - Noon
Mr. Battany will start the day with a lecture on the nature and properties of soils. He will discuss soil formation, the soil profile and its layers (horizons) and factors that influence a soil's suitability as a medium for vine growth. Then we'll put our classroom knowledge to work in the field, where we will look at 3 soil pits on the Inglenook property. We'll learn to distinguish the horizons and observe soil characteristics of each horizon, noting factors that influence the soil's suitability for grape growing.
Registration is limited to 2 attendees per company. This program is generously supported by the Farmworker Education Foundation of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers, and UC Cooperative Extension in Napa County.
