Pecan tree hedging in New Mexico

New Mexico State University has conducted five years of field trials in Las Cruces, N.M., on the impact of hedging and topping Western Schley variety pecan trees and how the practice impacts yields, nut quality, and the alternate bearing status of the trees. Farm Press Associate Editor Cary Blake talked with NMSU Extension pecan specialist Richard Heerema about the study results thus far, during the Western Pecan Growers Association Conference held this spring in Las Cruces.

New pecan variety available to US producers

Producers across the U.S. Pecan Belt and around the world have a new pecan variety to choose from which offers improved yields and good resistance to pecan scab disease. The new variety called Lipan was released by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in College Station, Texas. The ARS’ Tommy Thompson, who bred the Lipan variety, discusses the many pluses associated with the Lipan pecan in this Farm Press video.

Europe jumps into agricultural tire market

Rising sales of U.S. farm equipment has increased the demand for ag tires. A company that has been around in Europe for decades has decided to step into that market with a new plant in Charles City, Iowa. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Mitas CEO Jaroslav Cechura discussed the new entry at a grand opening ceremony for the $52 million plant.

Pecan producers reaping GPS rewards

More and more applications for GPS technology are being realized for production agriculture. One of the most recent examples is using GPS systems to plant commercial pecan trees in orchards within one-half inch accuracy. GPS also has a future in variable input management in pecan orchards allowing more precise applications and the potential to save producers’ money. This technology could also be applied to other tree nut crops.
