Table grape group awards scholarships

A Redwood High School senior who carried at 3.78 grade point average despite being profoundly deaf; an Exeter Union High School graduate with a perfect 4.0 gpa who wants to design a better bicycle with an engineering degree, and a Delano High School graduate who came to this country unable to speak English yet never was off the honor roll through his high school education are the recipients of $12,000 in college scholarships from the California table grape industry.
The California Table Grape Farm Workers Scholarship Program has awarded almost $500,000 in scholarships to more than 50 students since the program began in 1984.
The 2001 recipients are:
Jessica Sanchez, the youngest of four daughters born to Jess and Sara Sanchez. At Redwood High School in Visalia, Calif., she was the first deaf cheerleader in Visalia history; a member of the swim team and in her junior year second runner-up in Visalia's Junior Miss pageant. She maintained the 3.78 gpa while taking honors classes. She plans to attend Cal State Northridge, majoring in elementary education.
Nolan Henderson will attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the oldest son of David and Debbie Henderson. He participated in varsity tennis and basketball while maintaining his 4.0 gpa. Along with the goal of designing a better bicycle, he would also like to become a syndicated cartoonist.
Jorge Nunez was born in Durango, Mexico and moved with his parents, Elia Nunez and the late Magdaleno Nunez to Delano when he was five years old. It took Jorge a year to learn English, and after that he excelled in school. He maintained a 3.86 gpa in high school while earning a place on the honor roll for eight semesters. When he enrolls at California State University, Bakersfield he will join two of his sisters attending there. Jorge will major in computer science.
The California Table Grape Commission oversees the scholarship process.
