State will receive conservation funds

California will receive $7.7 million for farmland conservation from the recently-passed Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, also known as the 2002 Farm Bill. Additionally, California received $778,900 in EQIP funds specifically to address water conservation issues in the Klamath Basin.

The legislation is making available a new round of conservation funding for this fiscal year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Additionally, new eligibility requirements now allow farmers and ranchers statewide to participate, according to NRCS California State Conservationist Charles Bell.
