Massey utility tractors offer high performance features

“Two new Massey Ferguson utility tractors — the MF 271X at 59 PTO horsepower, and MF 281X at 69 PTO horsepower — offer new high performance features to handle primary tillage on small farms and light tillage, haying, hauling, and other hard usage chores on larger farms,” says Tim Wagner, Massey Ferguson general marketing manager.
“We have increased the productivity of these two tractors without stretching the customers budget,” added Wagner, “and their performance and versatility also makes them ideal for tough rental firm jobs and grounds maintenance operations.
The MF 271X (2WD) and MF 281X (2 and 4WD) include the quality components and features customers depend on: fuel-efficient Perkins engines, advanced Ferguson system hydraulics, an easy to use transmission with a wide range of working speeds, 4WD front axle engagement on-the-go without clutching, dual-stand “live” PTO, fully adjustable spring suspension seats, and folding ROPS.
Power is supplied by 1000 Series Perkins four-cylinder diesel engines with a Fastram combustion system that converts more fuel to energy, improves power and torque, is quieter during operation, and meets all Stage 1 off-highway emission standards. A long five-inch stroke produces maximum torque at low engine rpm for better performance.
An 8F×2R manual transmission is standard equipment with two speeds for slow operations, four working speeds for mowing, baling hay, tillage, spraying and other field operations, and two high speed gears are for transport.
A dual stage foot clutch controls both the transmission and the live 540 PTO. PTO speed is achieved at a low 1,904 engine rpm, allowing the engine to run at a higher torque rating under full load to help prevent lug down and the need to change ground speed.
The MF 271X and MF 281X have a Category II 3-point hitch linkage with interchangeable ball ends. Advanced Ferguson system hydraulics provide draft, depth, position and response control, constant pumping, and weight transfer for maximum traction.
Rear axle housings for both tractors are made of rugged square section cast iron with a 10,000-pound capacity for extreme loading conditions such as lifting large round bales or heavy fully-mounted implements with the 3-point hitch.
The MF 281X uses a parallel drive system with a low center of gravity for stability without sacrificing ground clearance or turning angle. Four-wheel drive can be engaged on the go without stopping or using the clutch.
Hydraulic and 3-point hitch controls are within easy reach to the operator's right. The spring suspension seat can be adjusted for the operator's height, weight and leg room, and a seat belt and folding ROPS are standard equipment.
