Broccoli, cauliflower costs examined

Two new cost of production studies for fresh market broccoli and cauliflower grown in the Central Coast are now available from the University of California Cooperative Extension.

The studies focus on production costs in the Central Coast region — Monterey County, the state's primary growing area. The analysis is based on a hypothetical vegetable farm operation using practices common in the region.

Input and reviews were provided by farm advisors, researchers, growers, farm accountants, pest control advisers, consultants and other agricultural associates. The reports describe assumptions used to identify current costs for the individual crops, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead. A ranging analysis table shows profits over a range of prices and yields. Other tables show the monthly cash costs, the costs and returns per acre, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment and business overhead costs.

The ABCs of MRLs

American agriculture exports 20 to 30 percent of its production annually. For specific commodities, the percentage is much higher. When recommending and applying pest management products for crops, license Pest Control Advisers (PCAs)  and applicators and farmers must be aware of which products applied are in compliance with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) established by foreign customers. This CE course details the MRL issue and why compliance is critical to marketing into world trade.
