The public is invited to join the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area (IGGPRA) for a seminar on Bunch Rot, Putting Your Vineyard to Bed, Pruning this Winter and an Electronic Notice of Intent Q & A with the Regional Water Quality Control Board. The seminar will be held from 1 p.m. - 3:30 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011 at Silver Horse Vineyard and Winery’s event center, located at 2995 Pleasant Rd. San Miguel, Calif.

2011 Western Alfalfa & Forage Conference & Biofuels Workshop

This is an interesting year for forages to say the least. Prices are at record high levels in many states, but dairies have found it difficult going as a result, and costs have gone up considerably for hay producers and dairy producers alike.

There are many challenges in the farming community, and there is strong interest in alfalfa, corn silage, and alternative forage crops. Growers and industry members are very interested in new products and ideas for saving money. This conference features about 35 speakers from many states who will present some of the latest information on economics, pest management, irrigation & soils, quality, utilization and genetics.

We have a special session on corn silage/alternative forages, forage quality, and on Roundup Ready and genetically-engineered crops. A pre-conference agricultural tour, demonstrating field production will take place on Dec. 11, the Forage conference on Dec 12-13. A Biofuels Workshop to explore biofuel possibilities in Western States will take place on Dec. 13. We expect to have 50-60 exhibitors focused on alfalfa & forage crops (alfalfa, corn silage, miscellaneous hays and biofuels).

Conservation easements seminar Jan. 23-25, Sacramento

This hands-on, how-to three-day seminar addresses the generally accepted principles and procedures to value partial interests (not fractional ownership interests, but something less than the fee bundle of rights). The seminar provides an overview of the differences between conservation easements prepared under USPAP, UASFLA/Yellow Book and IRS requirements and their application to partial estate valuations. Other partial interest examples and case studies encompass highway right-of-ways, power lines, pipelines and navigation easements that demonstrate how to solve complex valuation problems and report their results.

Effective this year, the A315 Valuation of Conservation Easements Course is a requirement for the ARA Designation. This 7-hour update course, developed by The Appraisal Foundation, focuses on recent changes to USPAP requirements for ethical behavior and competent performance by appraisers. The course clarifies several commonly misunderstood aspects of USPAP and will aid appraisers in all areas of appraisal practice. The course is instructed by an AQB Certified USPAP Instructor, recertified to instruct the 2012-2013 National USPAP Courses. It is intended to satisfy the requirements for license renewal, as well as fulfilling the continuing education requirements imposed by professional organizations, client groups and employers. Beet energy bioenergy crop meetings March 6-8

Meeting to update growers on status of future biorefinery and opportunities for farming energy beets.

Growers interested in adding an alternative crop to their rotation can find out about the flexibility, cash flow and exclusive contract opportunities available to them by growing energy beets. The Mendota Advanced Bioenergy Beet Cooperative is a group of established growers working to create a new bioenergy facility fueled by energy beets, a non-food crop similar to sugar beets, orchard waste and field culls.

When built, the biorefinery will create local jobs, buy energy beets and other raw material within a 60-mile radius of the plant, create renewable electricity and support the local economy. The Cooperative views grower and community relations as a key component of the overall development effort. Meetings to discuss this project will be held March 6, 7 and 8 in the following communities:

March 6:

“Energy beets” can be turned into advanced biofuel and cellulosic biofuel ethanol (AB-CB ethanol) through a proprietary bioenergy conversion process. Energy beets are an excellent rotation crop in the San Joaquin Valley — they are able to be grown in many types of soil conditions and can have an excellent financial return-rate for the grower. Valley yield history shows energy beets grown here can produce more ethanol per acre than any other crop anywhere in the United States — up to 1,200 gallons per acre vs. approximately 450 gallons per acre for corn-based ethanol. Biorefineries in Germany and France have been producing ethanol from energy beets for over 10 years. Alternative energy products such as ethanol produced from locally grown energy beets are important for US energy independence and to help sustain local economies.

The Mendota Advanced Bioenergy Beet Cooperative would like to invite any growers who are interested in learning more about the project and the opportunity for adding a bioenergy product into their rotation at the grower meetings. Southwest Ag Summit March 7-8 in Yuma, Ariz.

From just a single day in 2007, the Southwest Ag Summit has grown into two packed days of educational experiences targeting agricultural professionals, industry representatives, and educators.

The 2012 event will be held March 7-8 at the Yuma Agricultural Center, Pivot Point Conference Center, and the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, located in the heart of the Yuma Crossing National Historic Landmark, in Yuma, Ariz.

The growth is perhaps not surprising considering that the venue is at the center of some of the most diverse and productive agricultural land in the world with 1.2 million acres of irrigated fields located within 120 miles of Yuma.

Agriculture in Yuma County is a $3.2 billion industry; more than a third of the total annual production for the state.

The location also puts the Southwest Ag Summit - hosted by the Yuma Fresh Vegetable Association (YFVA) and supported by the University of Arizona and the Yuma County Farm Bureau - square in the middle of its target audience in Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, and northern Mexico.

"Our vision has been to create an event that will bring knowledge and innovation of agriculture to the desert regions as well as offer a venue that is conducive to relationship building and networking within our industry," said Mark Ellsworth, YFVA President.

Pest and disease management, desert alfalfa production, fresh produce safety, immigration-regulation, cotton production, and agricultural business management are just a few of the scheduled session topics.

Field days are free for all Napa County vineyard workers (limit 2 per company). Content will be delivered in Spanish.

Our first field day will be a trip to the Foundation Plant Services facility at UC Davis, on March 16, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Transportation will be provided, and bus will depart promptly at 8, from the offices of UC Cooperative Extension (1710 Soscol Ave). We will tour the facility, and learn about their mission as well as laboratory, greenhouse, and field practices to promote clean and certified plant material for nursery distribution.

Eye gnats are small flies that are exceptionally bothersome to humans and domesticated animals. They are endemic in California, but go unnoticed because they are in small numbers in the natural environment.

Unfortunately, they have become a serious agriculture/urban interface problem in San Diego County in recent years due to excessive numbers migrating from organic vegetable production. Organic farming creates an excellent environment in which eye gnats can reproduce. However, eye gnats do not cause any damage to the marketable plant.

County residents have revolted, and farmers are now under pressure from the County Department of Environmental Health to solve the problem. Onerous cultural and chemical methods are now being employed to solve the problem by farmers, but impacted residents are not satisfied with the results. Therefore, we are bringing some of the worlds experts together to discuss the issue and inform the public and private sectors about past, present and future solutions.

To help almond growers get off to a good start, a University of California farm advisor and a UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management specialist will outline valuable pest management and fertilizer tips for the fruit development period on Thursday, April 19 in Los Banos.

The free event will be from 10 a.m. to noon at corner of Mercy Springs and Cotton Gin roads in Los Banos. UC IPM entomologist Walt Bentley will discuss in-season monitoring pest pressures and preserving beneficial populations. David Doll, the Merced County UC Cooperative Extension pomology farm advisor specializing in almonds, will cover horticultural and fertilization practices for preventing diseases in the state’s leading export crop, worth $2.7 billion a year.

20th California Antique Farm Equipment Show April 20-22, Tulare

The 20th Annual California Antique Farm Equipment Show will showcase the agriculture industry's heritage at the International Agri-Center in Tulare on April 20-22. This year's show will feature hundreds of antique farm equipment exhibits and entertainment the whole family will enjoy.

Although the show's main attraction is antique equipment, the event offers something for the whole family. Children can play in the kid's area with a pedal tractor pull contest, bounce house and arts and crafts. Shoppers won't want to miss shopping at trendy boutiques featuring clothing, home goods, jewelry and more at Antiques & Boutiques in the Farm Credit Dairy Center all three days of the show.

Everyone will enjoy watching the antique equipment parade on Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Be sure to get a seat and watch as hundreds of antique trucks and tractors drive down Median Street for a show you won't soon forget!

For serious antique equipment enthusiasts, hundreds of antique tractors, engines and farm equipment will be on display during the three-day show. See antique earth movers in action as they dig in the tractor exposition area and visit more than 150 swap meet booths for iron works, antiques and wood crafts.

Opening day of the show, Friday, April 20, starts off with the opening of Antiques & Boutiques; entertainment in the kid's area; tractor pulls at 4:00 p.m. and dinner with music and dancing by Johnny Popper & the Implements.

Saturday is a great time to get the family together for a whole day of fun with a horseshoe tournament in the morning; entertainment by local performers and cooking demonstrations; an antique tractor pull contest in the afternoon; a barbecued steak dinner featuring entertainment by the Sons of the San Joaquin and an opportunity to bid on delicious baked goods at the bake sale.

Sunday starts off with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. followed by a non-denominational worship service; an antique auction; rib cook-off where contestants vie for top honors and cash prizes in beef and pork divisions; entertainment by local performers; cooking demonstrations and a hay boom contest.

This recently released study may have very significant impacts on future fertilizer practice and regulations in the San Joaquin Valley.

Background and Workshop Goals

UC Davis, under contract with the State Water Board, conducted an independent investigation and reported on the findings and potential solutions for nitrate in groundwater and drinking water in the Tulare Lake Basin and Salinas Valley.

The UC Davis Report examines sources of nitrate contamination, impacts and costs, as well as promising funding and policy options. This workshop will provide an overview of the study’s findings. A panel will reflect on the problem of groundwater nitrate, safe drinking water, promising solutions, and how this report might contribute to constructive policy discussions in defining the issues and promising directions. This workshop, hosted by the University of California, provides an opportunity to hear about the study and its findings and to also hear local perspectives on the study results.

With the winter rainy season over, it is clear that California is experiencing dry conditions. The Colorado River Basin, an important source of imported supplies for Southern California, is also dry. Impacts of the dry water year will be minimized for most water users who have access to water supplied from reservoirs and groundwater basins, thanks to good carry-over storage from a wet 2011. Impacts of a single dry year are most pronounced for those who rely on unmanaged water supplies (such as dryland grazing or non-irrigated agriculture), and small water systems using unreliable fractured rock groundwater sources. However, this year’s dry conditions emphasize the need to prepare for the possibility that 2013 might also be dry.

Winter 2011-12 was an unusual year. Near-record dry conditions during the normally most productive winter precipitation months were followed by an unseasonably wet late spring. The road over Tioga Pass was open until Mid-January, allowing travelers to visit Yosemite Valley at Christmas without their snow gear. Some growers in the San Joaquin Valley were irrigating in January. DWR’s forecasts of snowmelt runoff for the state’s major Sierra/Cascade river basins presently show that none of the basins are expected, at a 50 percent probability of exceedance, to reach average runoff levels; many in the central and southern Sierra are only expected to reach half to two-thirds of average values.

The webcast presentations will illustrate the vagaries California experienced in its weather this winter, and provide tips for conserving water in urban landscaping.

Sweet cherry rootstock and training system trial May 16, Courtland

Come and learn about the early stages of this trial, which is part of a National Cooperator rootstock project led by Dr. Greg Lang of Michigan State University. The local trial is being conducted by UC Farm Advisors Joe Grant and Chuck Ingels and grower Robert Arceo.

The trial was established in 2010 to compare four dwarfing rootstocks using three training systems: Rootstock Training System 1. Gisela 3 1. Upright fruiting offshoots (UFO) 2. Gisela 5 2. Tall spindle axe (TSA) 3. Gisela 6 3. Kym Green bush (KGB) 4. Gisela 12 (UFO only) The scion variety in the trial is Benton.

This is the first year of fruit production and the training systems vary greatly in their establishment inputs and early bearing habit. The trial has exposed both challenges and unique opportunities that can be expected but the jury is definitely still out on which rootstocks and training systems are most profitable.

This meeting will focus on discussing rootstocks and demonstrating early training methods. The meeting is free of charge. The trial location is Robert Arceo’s home ranch on River Road about halfway between Courtland and Walnut Grove. Trees were planted in March 2010 using the variety Benton. Spacing between trees is 5 ft. and row spacing is 16 ft. (consistent with the rest of the orchard). A trellis was installed, with 4 wires spaced 2 ft. apart and the top wire at 10 ft. above ground.

Free ag pump efficiency seminar May 17, Fresno State

With this year's surface water delivery estimates, chances are farmers will be relying heavily on pumps and wells this season. At a free seminar at Fresno State on May 17, growers can find out about proper procedures to prepare their pumping systems for the long, hot summer season ahead. Field demonstrations of pump testing and proper maintenance will be demonstrated in a hands-on approach on the Fresno State Farm.

The program will also include a real-time pump efficiency demonstration, information about pump efficiency tests and how to make sure they are working efficiently. Gopher Control Field Day May 18, Santa Rosa

Dr. Roger Baldwin, UC IPM Wildlife Pest Management Advisor has conducted pocket gopher control research the last three years in Sonoma County. In a two-hour field day on May 18, he will discuss all control practices targeting gophers used in an IPM program.

Topics to be addressed: monitoring, exclusion, trapping, biocontrol (raptors, owls, snakes), baiting with strychnine, fumigation with aluminum phosphide, and use of mechanical devices.

A gopher trapping protocol will be demonstrated and various trap types designed for gophers will be shown and discussed.

Dr. Baldwin will discuss the procedures for using bait and fumigation products as well as the current laws and regulations regarding the safe use and handling of those pesticides.

He will present information on a new, unregistered device he is currently evaluating in which pressurized carbon monoxide is introduced into the burrow system of a vole or gopher. That system is likely to provide reduced risk to non-targets.

“Water Sustainability in Agriculture” is the theme. The conference’s hosts are the University of Arkansas System of Agriculture and the UA Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. The NABC was founded in 1988 and is a consortium of 36 leading agricultural research and teaching universities, government agencies and institutions. The keynote address will be delivered by Marc Andreini, research fellow at the University of Nebraska Daugherty Water for Food Institute, on water management in Africa. Who should attend?
Growers, dairy operators, agency representatives, agricultural commissioners, policymakers and other concerned community members. The events are free and open to the public. Preregistration is required.

Objective is to:

Provide an educational forum on nitrogen use and management in agriculture
Discuss management of agricultural nitrogen and gain an understanding of how management of agricultural nitrogen is proceeding
Discuss the role of policy in nitrogen management
Explore solutions to nitrate in groundwater
Explore the need for additional research and education

UC Cooperative Extension specialists will describe methods of managing nitrogen on dairies and cropland. Members of the agricultural industry and representatives of statewide and regional programs will discuss the practical aspects of adopting nitrogen management practices. To wrap up the sessions, Parker will present a case study on the effects of policy on nutrient management in the Chesapeake Bay region in the Northeast and lead a discussion of the role of policy in nitrogen management in California.

Background
The report “Addressing Nitrate in California’s Drinking Water” released in March by the State Water Resources Control Board concluded that more than 90 percent of human-generated nitrate contamination of groundwater in the Tulare Lake Basin and the Monterey County portion of the Salinas Valley has come from agricultural activity.

Plants need nitrogen to grow, but nutrients that are not used by the crop may move below the root zone. Nitrate, a byproduct of nitrogen, may infiltrate to groundwater.

“The report found that farmers have already begun employing numerous techniques to reduce the amount of nitrogen fertilizer available in the soil,” said Doug Parker, director of the California Institute for Water Resources and leader for the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources water strategic initiative. “At the forums, we will be discussing how those efforts are proceeding and exploring additional solutions to protect groundwater quality. We’ll be asking the agricultural community what additional research and education they need from UC.”

Arrive within 15 minutes of the listed time for the workshop session you selected. This will allow for you to find parking, sign in and fill out your form for Continuing Education (CE) Credit (2.5 hours).

Why: There are beneficial and pest mites in the CA avocado system. Learning how to recognize, monitor and control pests is an important part of successful orchard production.

Workshop Description:

The persea mite (Oligonychus perseae) is a non-native leaf-feeding pest of avocado trees in California. The feeding damage caused by this mite has been recently linked with yield reduction. This training workshop contains a presentation and field demonstration with updated information on persea mite research and pest management for the California avocado system.

Participants will learn:

How to recognize beneficial and pest mites from avocado trees
The basics of persea mite biology, invasion history and management options (i.e., biological control and pesticide recommendations)
In the field demonstration, participants will get hands-on experience on how to use two simple sampling methods designedto estimate persea mite densities in commercial avocado orchards

Each session limited to first 25 participants that sign up and pay $5 registration fee by June 1, 2012
Participants will learn (1) how to identify beneficial and pest mites in avocado orchards (2) how to implement persea mite management options (biocontrol and pesticides) and (3) how to estimate persea mite densities in commercial avocado orchards.

2.5 hours of Continuing Education credit from CDPR will be available.
