District will buy green electricity

Guépard Energy Inc. (GEI) says Southern California's Imperial Irrigation District board of directors has approved the purchase of renewable, green electricity from four planned GEI agricultural biowaste management facilities.

Each of the facilities will process 400,000 pounds per day of agricultural biowaste from confined animal operations and cattle feedlots in Southern California's Imperial Valley and convert it into green energy.

These facilities will produce green electricity, steam, and both solid and liquid USDA certified 100 percent organic fertilizers. The company expects each facility to generate five megawatts of green electricity and 500 horsepower of steam. Additionally, with GEI's processing of cattle manure and waste from a local beef processing plant, GEI facilities will remove over 100,000 tons of volatile organic compounds emissions annually.
