Arizona Durum wheat acreage up 46 percent, upland cotton down 21 percent in 2008

Arizona’s Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 150,000 acres, up 70,000 acres from 2007. Growers are expected to harvest 149,000 acres for grain. Other wheat area is estimated at 13,000 acres, up 7,000 acres from a year ago. Growers intend to harvest 12,000 acres for grain.
The 42,000 acres planted to barley is up 7,000 acres from last year’s crop. Barley area harvested for grain is estimated at 40,000 acres.
Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 45,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from a year ago. Area harvested for grain is set at 20,000 acres, 3,000 acres less than last season. Sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 45,000 acres, the same as in 2007. Area harvested for grain is set at 25,000 acres, up 4,000 acres from a year ago.
The Arizona alfalfa hay harvested area is estimated at 260,000 acres, up 4 percent from 2007. All other hay area to be harvested is estimated at 35,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from a year ago.
Acreage planted to upland cotton is estimated at 140,000, down 30,000 acres from last year, but the same as the March intentions. American-Pima planted area, at 1,000 acres, is down 1,500 from last year.
