Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns has announced the appointment of 24 members and 11 alternate members to the Advisory Committee on Universal Cotton Standards. The committee was re-established by a charter issued on Aug. 6, 2004. Members of the committee represent merchants, manufacturers, ginners and growers.
“I am pleased that these individuals have agreed to serve on this important committee,” Johanns said. “The Advisory Committee on Universal Cotton Standards will be well served by their expertise.”
The members and alternates named will serve for the two-year period of the committee charter.
The appointed merchant members are: James A. Wade, Montgomery, Ala; Claud A. Acker, Bakersfield, Calif.; Edward L. Pell IV, Fresno, Calif.; Jeff A. Johnson, Cordova, Tenn.; John D. Mitchell, Memphis, Tenn.; Lonnie D. Winters, Lubbock, Texas.
The appointed manufacturer members are: Billy R. Henderson, Trion, Ga.; William E. Bowen Jr., Inman, S.C.; John B. Cleveland II, Easley, S.C.; John T. Hill, Lancaster, S.C.; Sidney T. Attaway, Greenville, S.C.; Mark K. Tapp, Danville, Va.
The appointed ginner members are: Russell L. Kuhnhenn, Buckeye, Ariz.; Larry McClendon, Marianna, Ark.; Van F. Murphy, Quitman, Ga.; Thomas S. Brough, Edroy, Texas.
The appointed grower members are: Steven E. Bales Jr., Buckeye, Ariz.; Thad R. Freeland, Tillar, Ark.; Donald J. Cameron, Fresno, Calif.; Jones O. Thomas, Dixie, Ga.; Kenneth B. Hood, Gunnison, Miss.; Henry A. McLaurin, Laurinberg, N.C.; Craig D. Shook, Corpus Christi, Texas; Jackie L. Burris, Wellman, Texas.
The appointed merchant alternate members are: Thomas J. Lea, Greenville, S.C.; Edward J. Hanslik, Austin, Texas; Bill H. Adams, Dallas, Texas.
The appointed manufacturer alternate members are: Eugene C. Frye, Belmont, N.C.; Vern C. Tyson Jr., Winston-Salem, N.C.
The appointed ginner alternate members are: Charles C. Owen Sr., Pima, Ariz.; Joe D. Blakemore, Campbell, Mo.
The appointed grower alternate members are: Norman L. Clark, Dos Palos, Calif.; Willie T. Brown, Yazoo City, Miss.; Robert D. Robbins, Altus, Okla.; Lawrence S. Ulmer, Sullivan's Island, S.C.
The committee will review the American Upland Cotton Standards and make recommendations to USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service concerning establishment and revision of the standards. The marketing of U.S. cotton is supported and enhanced through the committee's participation in the development of the standards.
Foreign participation in the Universal Cotton Standards development program is a longstanding tradition, and the committee provides for parallel participation by domestic and international cotton interests.
