More than 4,500 on-line continuing education courses offered by Western Farm Press have been completed by licensed Pest Control Advisers (PCA) and applicators and Certified Crop Advisers (CCA) in California and Arizona.

There are seven courses developed by Western Farm Press accredited for 16 credit hours currently available on www.westernfarmpress.com and the Web site of the California Association of Pest Control Advisers (CAPCA) Web site www.capca.com

Western Farm Press began offering online CEUs a little more than two years ago. The first course on California's groundwater protection laws should top 1,000 completions by the end of the year. It has been sponsored online by Bayer CropScience from the beginning.

Three more new courses were launched last year and two additional courses went online this year.

All courses are free.

“We have been very gratified by the response to the online CEUs. PCAs, qualified applicators and private applicators continue to ask for more online courses,” said Western Farm Press Publisher Greg Frey.

Dave Loquaci, Madera County, Calif., independent PCA and manager of grape vineyards and almond and stone fruit orchards took an online CEU for the first time this summer.

“I really like the crop specific courses like the almond course and the grape course. They provided good solid information on crop specific topics,” he said. This course on almond pest management was launched last spring and sponsored online by Chemtura.

Gillespie Ag PCA Charlie Backman of Tulare, Calif., took the new weed resistance management course also launched this year. “This is not only a very convenient way to earn hours, but I learned more from the on-line course than I do sitting in a room for three hours,” he said. Monsanto sponsors the weed resistance management course.

Salinas, Calif., PCA Dale Huss of Ocean Mist called the insecticide resistance management CEU “great course. Very informational.” It is sponsored by DuPont.

Frey enjoys reading the positive feedback from those who have completed the courses.

“My favorite is from an independent PCA from San Luis Obispo County, Calif., who consults on grapes and cut flowers on the coast,” said Frey.

Jill Lionvale of Arroyo Grande, Calif., completed the grape powdery mildew course online and in the comment portion of the check out page she wrote;

“I'm a working PCA with three small children. This is the only way I can get the hours I need when babysitters aren't available. So think about that and thanks!”

There are a little more than two months left for California and Arizona licensees to complete their credit hours for the year. Here is a list of courses and credit hours available via the Western Farm Press and CAPCA Web sites.
