Scale insects can stress trees and kill branches and fruit spurs. San Jose scale is a particularly destructive pest — one that tree nut growers must keep a close eye on during the dormant season.
It is during the dormant season, when San Jose scale are in the “black cap stage” — that juvenile San Jose scale insects are most susceptible to insecticide treatments.
A dormant or delayed dormant application of Seize™ Insect Growth Regulator provides long-lasting control of scale, including San Jose scale, lecanium scale, black scale, walnut scale, brown soft scale and more.
By preventing the immature San Jose scale from becoming adults, Seize breaks the scale life cycle without harming the beneficials that help keep secondary pests in check.
For best results, apply Seize with spray oil at the recommended rate. Because thorough coverage is crucial for control, ensure that the air blast sprayer has a good spray pattern and enough water (about 100-200 gallons per acre).
With a delayed dormant application, Seize will also provide partial control of peach twig borer (PTB), making Seize an ideal partner with DiPel® Biological Insecticide in a soft chemistry scale and PTB program.
In walnuts, if both San Jose scale and walnut scale are present, the ideal timing for a Seize application is just as walnut trees are leafing out — which is generally close to the spray timing for codling moth as well.
