The latest Arizona agriculture update from the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Phoenix, Ariz., Field Office:

• Field crops

Small grain harvesting remains active with at least 70 percent of the acreage complete. Cotton squaring is completed on 60 percent of the acreage across Arizona. Bolls are set on 35 percent of the acreage just behind the five-year average.

Alfalfa harvest remains active on over three-quarters of the acreage. Alfalfa conditions remain good to excellent. Range and pasture conditions vary from very poor to good depending on location and elevation.

• Vegetables, fruit, and specialty crops

Central Arizona growers shipped cantaloupes, honeydews, miscellaneous melons, potatoes, plus seeded and seedless watermelons this week. Western growers shipped cantaloupes, honeydews, miscellaneous melons, and seedless watermelons.

• Weather summary

Temperatures were above normal across Arizona for the week ending July 5, ranging from 1 degree above normal at Douglas to 9 degrees above normal at Payson.

The highest temperature of the week was 112 degrees at Roll and Yuma, and the lowest reading of 42 degrees occurred at Grand Canyon.

Precipitation was reported at 18 of the 22 stations. Willcox received the most at 1.49 inches of precipitation. Buckeye and Winslow received the least with 0.01 inches. Tucson and Willcox are the only reporting stations with above normal precipitation to date.
