Arizona Agri-Weekly: Alfalfa fair to good

Field crops

Cotton boll opening is at 78 percent complete, behind last year’s 81 percent and the five-year average of 82 percent. Cotton conditions are mostly good to excellent. Harvest continues in the Yuma area.

Most alfalfa is in fair to good condition. Harvesting is active on over two-thirds of the state’s acreage.

Vegetable, fruit and specialty crops

Arizona growers shipped miscellaneous melons this week.

Weather summary

Temperatures were mostly above normal across Arizona for the week ending Sept. 19, ranging from 3 degrees below normal at Parker to 9 degrees above normal at Prescott.

The highest temperature of the week was 111 degrees at Roll. The lowest reading at 32 degrees occurred at Grand Canyon.

No precipitation was recorded at any of the 22 weather stations. Eight of the 22 stations are at below normal precipitation to date.
