One-hundred-eleven California produce handlers are now enrolled in California’s Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, following an extension of time for enrollments announced in April.

According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), the signatory handlers represent nearly 100 percent of the leafy greens produced in California.

The agreement is designed to create even safer food safety standards for leafy green vegetable production and handling in California.

Final details about the inspection and certification program and use of certification marks by signatories remain under consideration by the Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement Board, the CDFA said.

Inspections are scheduled to begin within weeks. To date, handlers have been subjected to informational audits to prepare them for inspections. In the interim, it is the expectation that each signatory is compliant with the program’s guidelines for good agricultural practices, the CDFA reported.
